13 Signs of High Emotional Intelligence

Wonder what emotional intelligence looks like in everyday life? Here are 13 examples.

In 1995, psychologist and science journalist Daniel Goleman published a book introducing most of the world to the nascent concept of emotional intelligence. The idea--that an ability to understand and manage emotions greatly increases our chances of success--quickly took off, and it went on to greatly influence the way people think about emotions and human behavior.

But what does emotional intelligence look like, as manifested in everyday life?

For the past two years, I've explored that question in researching my forthcoming book, EQ, Applied. In doing so, I've identified a number of actions that illustrate how emotional intelligence appears in the real world.

Here are 13 of them:

1. You think about feelings.
Emotional intelligence begins with what is called self- and social awareness, the ability to recognize emotions (and their impact) in both yourself and others.

That awareness begins with reflection. You ask questions like:

What are my emotional strengths? What are my weaknesses?
How does my current mood affect my thoughts and decision making?
What's going on under the surface that influences what others say or do?
Pondering questions like these yield valuable insights that can be used to your advantage.

2. You pause.
The pause is as simple as taking a moment to stop and think before you speak or act. (Easy in theory, difficult in practice.) This can help save you from embarrassing moments or from making commitments too quickly.

In other words, pausing helps you refrain from making a permanent decision based on a temporary emotion.

3. You strive to control your thoughts.
You don't have much control over the emotion you experience in a given moment. But you can control your reaction to those emotions--by focusing on your thoughts. (As it's been said: You can't prevent a bird from landing on your head, but you can keep it from building a nest.)

By striving to control your thoughts, you resist becoming a slave to your emotions, allowing yourself to live in a way that's in harmony with your goals and values.

4. You benefit from criticism.
Nobody enjoys negative feedback. But you know that criticism is a chance to learn, even if it's not delivered in the best way. And even when it's unfounded, it gives you a window into how others think.

When you receive negative feedback, you keep your emotions in check and ask yourself: How can this make me better?

5. You show authenticity.
Authenticity doesn't mean sharing everything about yourself, to everyone, all of the time. It does mean saying what you mean, meaning what you say, and sticking to your values and principles above all else.

You know not everyone will appreciate your sharing your thoughts and feelings. But the ones who matter will.

6. You demonstrate empathy.
The ability to show empathy, which includes understanding others' thoughts and feelings, helps you connect with others. Instead of judging or labeling others, you work hard to see things through their eyes.

Empathy doesn't necessarily mean agreeing with another person's point of view. Rather, it's about striving to understand--which allows you to build deeper, more connected relationships.

7. You praise others.
All humans crave acknowledgement and appreciation. When you commend others, you satisfy that craving and build trust in the process.

This all begins when you focus on the good in others. Then, by sharing specifically what you appreciate, you inspire them to be the best version of themselves.

8. You give helpful feedback.
Negative feedback has great potential to hurt the feelings of others. Realizing this, you reframe criticism as constructive feedback, so the recipient sees it as helpful instead of harmful.

9. You apologize.
It takes strength and courage to be able to say you're sorry. But doing so demonstrates humility, a quality that will naturally draw others to you.

Emotional intelligence helps you realize that apologizing doesn't always mean you're wrong. It does mean valuing your relationship more than your ego.

10. You forgive and forget.
Hanging on to resentment is like leaving a knife inside a wound. While the offending party moves on with their life, you never give yourself the chance to heal.

When you forgive and forget, you prevent others from holding your emotions hostage--allowing you to move forward.

11. You keep your commitments.
It's common nowadays for people to break an agreement or commitment when they feel like it. Of course, bailing on an evening of Netflix with a friend will cause less harm than breaking a promise to your child or missing a major business deadline.

But when you make a habit of keeping your word--in things big and small--you develop a strong reputation for reliability and trustworthiness.

12. You help others.
One of the greatest ways to positively impact the emotions of others is to help them.

Most people don't really care where you graduated from, or even about your previous accomplishments. But what about the hours you're willing to take out of your schedule to listen or help out? Your readiness to get down in the trenches and work alongside them?

Actions like these build trust and inspire others to follow your lead when it counts.

13. You protect yourself from emotional sabotage.
You realize that emotional intelligence also has a dark side--such as when individuals attempt to manipulate others' emotions to promote a personal agenda or for some other selfish cause.

And that's why you continue to sharpen your own emotional intelligence--to protect yourself when they do.

This is what it is like now; work or rest, do things or humor people. I think that sums up the moment that I am aware for you are probably wondering, is this personal or public? This is public for now I know enough to write what I feel. I think so I believe that this is an interesting point in my life. My friend moved out and left me here. I am now wondering if things are going to be okay. I think with the right angel calling, things will turn out okay and all will be alright.

I think this reminds me that things aren't as one might think, this is where thinking things through helps the mind out big time. Things are aware and you know what is possible, that is where things can happen and then things turn out to be normally sensed again. So that is where this counts as an idea to create what you want and where or when you need the idea to manifest. So I will go ciou and farewell now till later. Good-bye.

Right now I am thinking about the website so I will do a good job. Just so, this is an idea to use: the right information for the correct given moment. So I think I will do a good job and think of a way to work with the ego, this will be fun to do.

This reminds me to do things that make better for better purpose, so I think I will go do what I need and not worry over spilt milk. This also means I get to add my name into the names database of the Parker sun probe database that they are sending to the the sun with the ship. Exodus; to think about things, you know things about a place and send someone or yourself there by feel.

Jay's law practice; he can afford what he needs to afford and his law license gets unsuspended with mitigation of negative consequences.

Maria; she gets everything situated as she needs the situation. She can get me in when I normally can't get in. She makes and has time for the wellness check. So she manages her time correctly.

The point; the point you do things is the point you can get things. So things are as you think, they aren't as bad as you and they might think. I am there as an associate so think what you want.

Maria; her meeting is cut short and she meets with Andrew Mcdowell soon enough. As Josh comes in and causes her to go on wellness checks.

Tf2; he makes it through the jumps of some rocket jumping maps easily.

Maria; she comes today and does what is necessary.

Getting thinner; I am losing weight and keeping it off. This is by activity and doing things that make up the day.

Spiritual guidance; the spirit energy that you direct and this is by voice, thinking and idea expression that can end in a spirit glide.

Moment; moment to moment action that ends good. This is negating bad feel by positive idea that's done or expressed.

Area; area use that is knowable by what is seeable.

Other things

Control toned; the control tones cease and no longer happen control.

Tour; the tour works out well.

Normally; however things work, I don't have to do things moment to moment. All I have to do is things for a purpose.

Thinking; the thinking point I quit at is this, the point of no return unless necessary. Think in a way to do things, and I understand this is easily thought of a way to do the idea. Think and know is the key to this idea. If you can think you can know.

Smells; the halls smell good no matter the point. This is for a tour that will come through.
Think so and do; this is where you do things any way that you think to do the point or idea that is needed.

Think; think and do, this is the think and do point for the activity necessary and things you do is right to the moment.

Fix; you discovered the secret to eternal youth with or without exercise.

Losing weight; fattening or thinning I will eat the right things by feel and lose 3 pounds by three days from now to lose weight.

Andrew; he lessens tensions between his father and him. His tiredness disperses and he is no longer tired. He drives safely enough to elreno and back if necessary.

Andrews father; he doesn't lose the house keys. He can lift up the heavier items.

The store clerks; they don't mind what I do by the power of haaiah.

Intention; Think of the moment and time, then feel like interrupting as you think a thought. You then get their reaction of doing something else until you stop thinking that thought or feeling like interrupting. If close by then you can make a sound to get their attention.

Influence; think of your need and the thought you have is done by feel or expression.

Abandoned; I feel like I've been abandoned and left to my fate, to live here until I find a way to move and stay away. So be it I accept the point and don't mind it.

Time to start

Its time, thinking to start with a photo I will build up a website for a friend. This will be fun. So what will be on it? Non personal stuff, selling stuff and things of that nature. Other news is this point my friend is moving out and I will miss him as he was my gaming entertainment. So I will wait around and download things to do from this point on. I will do what I can if I can and if not I will relax.

This reminds me of the idea that I need someone to entertain myself, where I don't really so I think I will enjoy the days to come. Thinking to service the community, I will do what I can. This is where I ciou and farewell till later. Goodbye.

thoughtless reactions

Here are some realistic thought of reactions to the idea of think the point and you create the point.

Dr appointment; they get to my appointment and call me in by feel. This happens sooner than normal.

Need; I do not need to eat or overeat anymore.

Aware; I am well aware of things to occur, so now all I do is wait or create to order and do what is necessary. So see you around and farewell.

Other things:
Weight loss; weight loss becomes easier. This is excepting the the things I wear.

Atlas v; Andrew Mcdowell and I get to see the su cessful launch of goe-17 that is goes-s. I saw the launch and was quite interested in the timed results.

Tf2; Andrew and andrews team wins no matter the color. This is without stress or tension on the players part. No matter what unless I am playing it, this is a point for Andrew..unless not taken advantage of by feel. However, andrew mcdowells team find it easier to win.

Weight; I lose weight instead of gaining it excepting item weight by feel.

Markup; offer something and then make it seemably good. Then you sell your idea or item as good, an if then this works in trade even though things are interesting or bad off.

Luck; my luck has turned good for once, so I might as well enjoy the outcome. I wonder what brought on the bad luck?

It's; it's okay to play a game but it not okay to react to people as if they were in the game. So I think I will wait my turn and work with others on the basis of fair idea. This will be my fun for the day.

He's here; wait on him and work with his idea or situation as he presents the moment. Think and you know what to do.

Li; like the moment to work with things that make sense. This is how I make sense sometimes, so some would work with things if I proffer them. Well I don't if I don't proffer.

Easy; if it's an easy route then take it. If it is then it is okay.

Coin; this is a coin hex where you pick up a coin for luck. Pick up a tales sided coin off the ground and you have some bad luck coming, pick up a heads sided coin from the ground and you have good luck.

Side; the side is the thing or item appearance of one flattish area.

Idea; some point pointed out and you paid attention to the details or idea.

The point; the point is the idea you react to till you don't need to do things.

Sleep; the putting off time and sleeping the moment away is think of sleep, and focus on the back of your brain to cause time to pass away.  Now to wake up, think your awake and the brain becomes aware.

An effective thing to do with this is weight loss instead of sleep till a point, this is where you think gradual weight loss till a decided point to stop at by feel. This is despite what you eat instead of passing the time.

This way this effects by lowering the weight over a period of time. The weight doesn't come back onto you either.
